Colonel, |
I have the honor to report that but seven
car loads of stores have arrived {on the Savannah,
Albany & Gulf RR}. Mr Ash & 14 Negroes arrived here on Friday
evening on his way back to Macon. I detained him here for the present to
assist me in storing the goods. Both Mr Ash and myself thought it better
for him to remain here as I was hiring negroes at high rates to do my
work, unless you ordered otherwise. I am considering distressed about
the car containing the Quicksilver nails, &c. which left Savannah last
sunday morning a week ago, and got as far as #9, and was left with the
bumper broke. I have used every effort to get the Agt. to get it
repaired and sent through and have failed. Two of the cars received here
and one half of the third were loaded with your stores and the balance
with Col Cuylers. One of the above cars is a platform car loaded with
Col Cuylers machinery which I have not unloaded it being Lathe beds
principally and the car is not wanted. |
Mr Ash reports that when he left Savannah
he had 3 box cars loaded with your stores and 4 loaded with Col Cuylers
stores besides 1 Platform Car with both yours and his stores on board of
it. All of which he thinks got off. Mr Ash left Sav at half past 7 a m
on friday morning on a trial train, the passenger train having left at 4
a. m. and he saw there were no cars at the yard when he left. The only
question is whether those cars were sent from the Central
{(of Georgia)} RR depot the night before |
I have sent Mr Ash back on the road to
hunt up all the cars that may be behind and bring them through. He has
orders from the Commander of the post requiring the R. R. authorities to
render him every assistance in their power. Mr Ash came over the road on
the last train out from Sav. We are officially informed that the road
was cut soon after that train passed over. |
Capt Johnson now has charge of all the
transportation between this point & Albany {about
60 miles}, he is now here with an Ammunition train of 40 wagons.
He says he has orders to transport yours & Col Cuylers stores to Albany
{where they would be loaded on South Western RR
cars for Macon}, and he is rendering me much assistance hauling
for me. He has a train of 36 wagons coming through from Albany. The
Ammunition train will probably return with the ammunition the brought
here. The Commissary train of 36 wagons will probably carry some of your
stores to Albany Although they may be required to carry back their
stores that they brought here. Mr Edgerly will go with the first train
of wagons that leaves here with stores and will take with him Col
Cuylers papers &c. I shall do the best I can to carry out your orders,
to collect and send forward all the property of yours & Col Cuylers
departments. At the same time you must excuse any blunders I may make;
as this is rather new business to me, and every thing here is confusion
confounded. However I have succeeded very well thus far in overcoming
many difficulties. |
I am Colonel |
Very Respectfully |
