The Louisville & Nashville
R. R. should, with its present rolling stock, by efficient and proper
management, carry promptly all Government supplies offered for
shipment. |
The other Rail Roads
terminating in this city are crowded with Government freight, and
cannot be relied on to do the work of the Louisville & Nashville
Road, without failing to do their own. |
There are now no commissary
supplies ready for shipment; so soon as notified by Capt Shaaf
transportation will be obtained if possible. |
I feel unwilling to be held
responsible for prompt and speedy shipments by this Road, unless the
control of it is placed in my hands. I was put in charge of the Road
by Gov. Harris, the State of Tenn. holding its bonds to a heavy
amount, and having thereby a lien on the Road. The present management
of the Road will, I feel satisfied, give neither promptness nor
efficiency to the service, nor security to the interests of the State.
Should Gen Johnston see fit to entrust to me the control of the Road,
I will immediately send to Bowling Green a man personally known to me
to be an experienced and energetic Rail Road officer. |
There are unaccounted for some
forty cars, supposed to be part of the number assigned to the Memphis,
Clarksville & Louisville Branch of the L & N R Rd. at the time
Gen Buckner seized the latter Road. These I should like reported as to
present condition and use. |
Respectfully &c, |
