In accordance with special order No --
issued from your office, I have made a partial examination of L. & N. R.
R. Branch from Bowling Green to Nashville. {This
was the main line of the Louisville & Nashville RR} |
I find the road badly managed and in my
opinion the Superintendent and many of the employees of the Road are
wholly Incompetent to fill the places occupied by then. I saw men
actually in the capacity of Breaksmen so much intoxicated as to be
wholly incompetent to attend to their duties. |
I am of the opinion from the best
information that I can get that many of the accidents that have occurred
lately come from negligence or from the utter co??ness of the employees
especially the accident of the 13th. More men should be employed as
Breaksmen and men not habitual drunkards. There should also be employed
in the depot at this place a few good Porters or Depot men. |
The Rolling Stock of the Road is not kept
in good repair and when an accident does occur the cars are not promptly
repaired. No water is provided for Passengers during the trips. |
Trains laden with the sick are kept on the
trip to Nashville as much as Twelve Hours sometimes without water. |
Most Respectfully |
