Dear Sir, |
On the 8th day of June 1863 we
furnished Capt. T. R. Sharp having the charge of the Govt works at
Raleigh N. C. with 12780lb Hammered Iron at 18 c per pound as per
contract bearing date 1863 and before we
presented our bill for payment, Capt Sharp was relieved and the
Locomotive Shops at Raleigh discontinued and Capt Sharp removed to
Columbia S. C. When he was relieved he turned over to Maj W W Pierce
of Raleigh all the Government property he had on hands, this Iron
included. Capt Sharp contends that Maj Pierce should pay for the same
as the property was turned over to him and Maj Pierce says he
receipted Capt Sharp for the property as paid for. They both admit the
claim to be just & unpaid but the difficulty seems to be that each
thinks the other ought to pay it. We have letters from both of them to
this effect. We had before this delivered a large amount of Iron to
Capt Sharp for which he paid us. |
Can you aid us in any way to
get this matter adjusted and paid. The amount owed $2300.40 is but a
very small matter for the Government but to us struggling with poverty
and furnishing the Iron at 1/4 its actual cost it operates as a very
great hardship to be delayed in our just claim for 12 months or more.
I know that you had your time & patience boxed to an unreasonable
extent but from your uniform kindness heretofore I hope you can
get this matter adjusted at the proper department. We have repeatedly
applied to both Capt Sharp & Maj Pierce for payment but each one alleges
the other ought to pay the bill. |
Respectfully |
