Sir, |
I am placed in a very unpleasant situation
in regard to working for the Govt. 10 days ago Capt C C Lewis called
on me for the use of a train to go to S. W. Ga for corn for the Govt.
As only 15 cars could be ??? over the South Western Road, on account
of difficulty of Grades &c and this Road could oblige something
for expenses by bringing the balance of the load in Cotton from Macon,
I sent the train. Tuesday Mr Johnson Agt for War Dept called on me for
a train to carry Govt Cotton to Charleston, which I declined to do on
the grounds that I should have to incur an outlay of $600 to $700. We
are working now from money which we borrow. |
I have desired to make this communication
to you, that my action may be understood in case that complaints are
made against me. |
We have always been anxious to serve the
Govt and still desire it, and regret that the Road should be forced
into action detrimental to the Govt and desire to assure you that
nothing but necessity compels me to do so. |
Yours Respy |
