I John S. Goforth Superintendent of the
East Tennessee & Virginia R R Co. depose and say that the within
account of $88,008 80/100 is correct and just, that the services
were rendered to the Confederate States and that the rates charged
are five (5) cents per mile per man for Troops and Macon Rates for
freight as allowed by the Q M General, and the vouchers presented
are the only vouchers held by the R Rd Co for the services rendered
-- furthermore most of the freight consisted of supplies for Genl.
Longstreets army, the transportation for which was generally
furnished before written vouchers were given, that they were given
after delivery in the shape of orders for transportation and were
entended both for orders and receipts, although no formal receipt is
endorsed. In consequence of the removal of Longstreet's army, it is
now impracticable to procure receipts from his Qr Master
Commissaries, and to request such receipts would in effect be to
deprive the R Rd Company of its just compensation for services
rendered. |
