Dear Sir, |
From instructions just recd
from Capt Daune Supt W&M RR {Wilmington
& Manchester RR} our trains are prohibited from
bringing private freights from Wilmington, on account of recent
arrangements made with the Nashville & C{hattanooga} R. R. |
Capt C. C. Sims has also asked
us to run some trains under the recent offer made to the different RR
Cos Stating that the Govt was greatly in need of cotton at Wilmington,
which I have agreed to do. This forces us to run our trains to a
distance of 600 miles (loaded one way) (Augusta to Wilmington &
Back) at sixteen and two thirds cents (16 2/3c) for 100 pounds for 100
miles. I am at all times ready to assist the Govt in any way that is
in my power, but in justice to our stockholders I cannot stand the
above figures. I am willing to run our trains under the 5 per cent
offer for a time if you will allow us $2.50 for 100 lbs Augusta to
Wilmington. What about the last bill for iron we sent you. |
Very respct &c |

Wallace, Acting Superintendent, East Tennessee & Georgia RR} |
