| Yours of the 3rd inst asking for the
detail of 2d Lieut J. J. Davis of the Engineer troops of Polks Corps as
engineer upon the road under your charge has been received. |
| I regret to say that the exigencies of the
service do not permit the Bureau to comply with your request. The same
qualities which would render the assistance of Lieut Davis valuable to
yourself led to, and fit him for, his present military position, and the
army cannot dispense with the services of an efficient and skilful
officer. |
| I trust that you will be able to secure
the necessary aid elsewhere. |
