Whitford to Sec of War dated Hillsboro N. C. Aug 28, 1863, in regard
to one hundred tons of rails arrived from Kinston for Navy Dept.
asking for directions &c. |
Engineer Bureau. 2 Sept. 1863. The
endorsement on the next fold has been made under a misapprehension. R.
R. iron not coal, is the article in dispute. This telegram is resply
returned to the chief of ordnance with the suggestion that the
Wilmington & Weldon R. R. Co. should have the iron on condition
that they furnish old iron promptly in its place to the Navy Dept
paying for stoppage of the rolling mill if any is caused by delay. It
is further resply. recommended that the business be transacted by the
commissioners for the removal of Rail Road iron, & that the
telegram be referred to them. Their office is at the corner of 10th
