| Sir, |
| The charter granted to the Piedmont R. R.
Co by the State of North Carolina fixes the gauge of their Road at 4
ft 8 1/2 inches. Unfortunately the supply of rolling stock of that
gauge belonging to or which can be commanded by the Confederate States
is exceedingly limited, while on the contrary, a fair supply of
rolling stock for the 5 ft gauge, is on hand, or can be obtained. |
| As the construction & equipment of the
Road is clearly a great military necessity for the Confederate States,
I would most respectfully suggest that the prompt representation be
made to the Governor of North Carolina setting forth this military
necessity & requesting him, if in his power, to authorize the
construction of the Road with 5 ft. gauge: with the understanding
however, that the gauge established by charter be adopted when the
military necessity ceases. |
| Should the Governor of North Carolina not
deem himself empowered to meet your wishes, the question is still
respectfully submitted to you in consideration of the importance of
early & favorable action if possible. |
| Very Resp your obt servt. |
