Your telegram recd. Orders sent which will
ensure more rapid delivery of iron at other end of break. Delay
believed to have been caused by refusal of North Carolina R. R. to
transport except on certain conditions. Quarter-Master General has
ordered that as many additional teams as are required to press the
work be furnished. Ten & one third miles of iron taken from {Richmond
&} York river R. R. for your Road. Arrangements made to
send forward from the Tredegar Works spikes as speedily as possible.
Continue to assign flat iron to the Nitre & Mining Bureau -- it
will all be accounted for. Lt. Col. Blackford with about sixty
Engineer Troops & one hundred & twenty negroes went up this
morning to assist in pressing the work. Two hundred axes, fifty picks
& fifty shovels sent with them. |
