Endorsement on letter of Maj C. R. Collins
dated Fredsburg July 22d/63 stating that orders from Genl Lee dated
June 28th direct him to destroy the RRd between Fredericksburg &
Acquia Creek {the Richmond, Fredericksburg &
Potomac RR} & remove material if possible -- states that he
cannot spare any of his command for the purpose. |
"Respy retd to Maj Genl Elzey, I have
just had an interview with the Hon Secy of War in reference to the
removal of iron from the RRd between Frdesburg & Acquia Creek, and
he desires me to say to you as follows -- viz: That every effort is
being made to remove the iron, that Lieut Stuart Engr Corps has, after
many other efforts to get labor succeeded in getting 25 or 30
conscripts -- some mechanics, who are taken yesterday to commence
work, that his brother Major Seddon can secure further assistance
& that he wishes you to direct Maj. Collins to give Military
protection to the operations & have his force assist as far as
possible in removing the iron, as much needed for our main Railroads.
All labor must be first applied to the removing of the iron, destroying
the bridge only as a last necessity." |
