Eng Bureau 24 June 64 Resp'y
referred to Hon Sec'y of War. The views of Genl. Lawton are most
cordially concurred in, & every effort will be made to assist the
Road as far as the Engr service can accomplish it. The most
important & vital point however is an adequate supply of iron for
the track, which unfortunately in my opinion can not be furnished
under the present system of impressment as every injunction easily
obtained stops proceedings. I therefore take this occasion to urge the
seizure of iron promptly as an important Mil. necessity, from
unimportant roads for this & other vital lines. |
Col. Garnett will designate (in fact has
designated) the roads to be despoiled for the common benefit & I
respy request instructions as to the method of procedure in future. |
