Captain,
I enclose herewith a copy of a letter referred by the Sec'y of War to this Bureau for consideration & reply calling attention to the resolution of the Senate of May 13/64 in relation to the Rome & Blue Mountain R. R.
You will please make a full report to this Bureau on all the points referred to in the Senate resolution, forwarding copies of all contracts & statements of money expended in the prosecution of the work & sending copies also of the mortgages made by the companies holding the charters in Ala & Ga.
Lt. Col. Meriwether writes under date of May 29th 1864 that "the condition of this work is the same as stated in a former letter. The total distance is 61 miles of which 31 miles are graded & bridged (15 miles next to Blue Mountain & 16 miles next to Rome) leaving 31 miles to grade which I am informed will not exceed ??? cubic yards. The company has 80 negroes which they will put to track laying as soon as we furnish the iron. Should there be any points above which you cannot give the required information, please communicate with Col. Meriwether.
Resp'y yours
A. L. Rives
Col. &c
A compact, clear & not too long report is all this is required. Great fullness is not necessary as the question just at this time is not of such vital importance as it has been. It may however become again necessarily important.
