Endorsement on letter from Col. C. F. M.
Garnett in regard to impressment of R. R. iron from various R. Roads
for imperative needs of main lines recommends vigorous
& prompt action by mil. authority. 23 June 64 |
Engr Bu 23d June 64 Resp'y
forwarded to Hon Sec'y of War. This communication is approved, the
only portion of the Y. R. R. R. {Richmond &
York River RR} which should be impressed ??? appears to be
beyond the Chickahominy. Gen'l Lee may perhaps have mil. objections to
the removal of this iron which are unknown to this Bureau. |
The question of successful transportation
on the main lines will depend principally upon the supply of R. R.
iron which can alone be obtained by impressment. The opinion of the
commissioners being decidedly that an adequate supply can be obtained
only by prompt mil. impressment as a matter of necessity, owning to
the innumerable & prolonged legal vexations & delays, it is
strongly urged as of vital importance that the within Roads be seized
& their iron applied to the absolute wants of the Confederacy. |
