By Instruction of the Hon. Sec. of War, in
addition to your present labors, you are charged with the duty of
examining into, and reporting to the Bureau upon, all applications
from Rail Road Companies to the Government for supplies of iron. Your
report in each particular case will clearly set forth -- |

the amount & kinds of iron which in your
judgment should be furnished |
2 |
the amount of old iron which can be given in
exchange by the company |

If your report is approved the terms of
purchase and exchange will be settled by you in consultation with
Lieut. Col. St. John Chief of the Nitre and Mining Bureau. |
