Endorsement on letter from Capt. L. P.
Grant, Atlanta, Georgia, May 18th 1863. In relation to the Rail
Road connection at Montgomery, Ala. |
"Respectfully referred to the Hon.
Secretary of War. If the connection were made between the Rail
Roads at Montgomery, a great savings to the Government in the item of
drayage would result and much time would be gained in forwarding
freights. I would recommend that Government aid be given to the Rail
Road Companies interested and to the following extent, viz. |
1st. |
The Government pay the difference of cost, if
the work be done now (when labor and materials are unusually
high) over what would be the probable cost after the close of
the war. |
2d. |
The Government to use its power to procure the
two miles of iron, the rail road companies paying for the same
at a proper appraisement. |
