Endorsement on letter from Mr. Hugh Rice,
Supt. & Chf Engineer Manassas Gap R. Rd. dated Richmond, Va. May
12th 1863. Has a number of car loads of scrap iron and various
portions of machinery which he thinks will be of vast use to the Govt.
and says it is being stolen by the citizens and enemy, desires some
Govt. teams to haul it to Staunton, will pay for the same, will sell
the iron to the Govt. at market price. |
"Respectfully referred by
direction of Col. J. F. Gilmer to Major I. M. St. John with a
request that if in consultation with Colonel Gorgas it is deemed
judicious a portion, at least, of the teams employed in hauling gun
iron may be diverted for a time to haul the railroad material
specified within and so much needed, especially locomotive wheel
tires. |
