General,
I am instructed by Colonel Gilmer, Chief Engineer Bureau, to respectfully solicit your views in regard to the propriety and practicality of taking iron from the Norfolk & Petersburg railroad. There is a great want of iron to complete that important link of railway connection between Danville and Greensboro {the Piedmont RR} and it is thought that a portion at least of the requisite quantity may perhaps be obtained from that Road without material injury to other interests. An early reply of your views is solicited.
Very Respectfully Your obt. Sevt
