Captain, |
I have just had an interview with Mr.
Harvie, President of the Piedmont R. Rd. in which he called my attention
to a proposition to take the 225 slaves called for from Henry County to
work on your Rail Road. I approve the plan. You will therefore
communicate at once with Mr. James M. Smith of Henry Country, or other
party who may have the Negroes in charge and notify him that you will,
as agent for the Government, receive and give the necessary receipts for
the hands. |
If the county fails to furnish the full
number, please notify this Bureau at once, so that the necessary steps
may be taken to compel a compliance with the law. |
Very Respectfully Yours |
J. F. Gilmer |
Colonel of Engrs. & Chief of Bureau |
