The Sec'y of War objects to giving acting
commissions to field officers of engineer troops. Minor Meriwether was
recommended to Majority of engineer troops. Do you wish him appointed
Major of Engrs to replace Capt Walker on the commission for the
removal of railroad iron? Including Majors Douglas and Presetman,
there are still two vacant majorities in the Provisional Engineer
Corps, and the appointment suggested would seem to be judicious. |
