Capt, |
Being impressed with the importance of
constructing works for the defense of the bridges across the Holston,
Watauga, Tennessee & Hiawassee rivers, I must ask you to give
attention to the subject. The works should be placed within the range
of small arms from the bridges, & of sufficient strength to resist
sudden attack. Substantial stockades may answer, but works of great
strength are desirable. Such defenses all add much to the security of
these important R. Rd. bridges by preventing surprises which have
proved so disastrous on them. The application of Capt. Forts for axes,
cross cut saws, &c will be responded to by the Bureau as full as
possible within a few days. You will proceed to keep this office
informed of general operations. |
Yours Very Truly |
