Captain, |
Being impressed with the importance of
constructing works for the defence of the bridges across the Holston,
Watauga, Tennessee & Hiawassee rivers, I must ask your earliest
attention to the subject. The works should be placed within the range of
small arms from the bridges, & of sufficient strength to resist a sudden
attack. Substantial stockades may answer, but works of great strength
are desired. Such defenses will add much to the security of these
important RRd bridges by preventing surprises which have proved so
disastrous in the past. The application of Capt Foster for axes, cross
cut saws, &c will be responded to by the Bureau as far as possible
within a few days. You will please to keep this office informed of your
operations. |
