Your telegram of today has just been received, and laid
before General Johnston and in reply thereto, he instructs me to say,
that in consequence of an understanding he had with the officers of the
Road leading from Meridian to Demopolis, he directed that all persons
furnishing negroes to work on Rail Roads in this Department would be
credited for as much labor done for military purposes, and the owners of
such negro labourers credited for it on account of military impresments.
The same credit would be given for wagon and teams. No direct
impressments can be authorised. |
