Dear Sir,
In reply to your telegraphic of the 23rd in reference to the strengthening of the Ashley River Bridge immediately upon its receipt. Whatever plan will accomplish the object proposed. I shall be extremely gratified to see carried out. I am not however sufficiently acquainted with this branch of Engineering to make my opinion of the proposed plan of much value. One great object of the work in my mind is the safety of the rolling stock of the C&S RR with the increased facilities, it will afford for the removal of persons and property should it become necessary or desirable. So many troops have recently been removed from this Dept. that the transportation of public stores &c will also be correspondingly diminished, within a few days all Infty ad Arty Corps between the Ashepoo & Hardeeville will be drawn in for the defence of Charleston. The Cavalry force will not be reduced on the contrary I shall endeavor to strengthen it. I may be compelled shortly to bring on Col Graham' Regt to this neighborhood but will leave the Cavalry, and a long as practicable Ward' Battery.
