Colonel, |
In reply to your letter of 2nd of July just received I am
directed by Maj Genl Gilmer to say that he is unable to make any
appointment to confer with you in reference to the defences of Danville
as you request. He has been waiting here for several days anxiously
expecting a notification from Maj. Suthertin Q. M. of an arrangement for
transportation across the gap {in the Richmond &
Danville RR}. The delay has been so great that he feels it
important to go on to Richmond as soon a practicable. Maj. Chisman Q. M.
who is now with you will provide transportation it is thought by
tomorrow and in that case Genl Gilmer will leave Greensboro tonight. In
reference to the defence of the bridge, he directs me to say that the
works should be placed within musket range if possible, and should be
closed on all fronts to provide against sudden assaults by cavalry. It
is desirable in al cases to have some artillery mounted in each work.
Small field pieces are the best as they can be moved quickly. |
For the general defence of Danville against raids, he
recommends that lines of infantry can be constructed to defend the
easiest approaches & that obstruction be made by felling timber whenever
practicable. Easy communications from point to point should be decided
upon in order that your forces may be moved readily from one to the
other. Genl. Gilmer requests that you will say to Capt. Myers that he
will answer promptly any questions in matters where he may be in doubt. |
