Major, |
I am directed by Maj Genl Gilmer to say, that to furnish
the necessary supplies to the Army of Northern Va it is imperative that
the Richmond & Danville R. R. which has been broken by the enemy should
be repaired at the earliest possible day. To this end Rail Road iron
must be obtained from the Charlotte & Statesville R. R.
{Atlantic, Tennessee & Ohio RR} & Genl
Gilmer has just assigned Lieut. Col. Clarke, of the Engineers, to the
duty of collecting & forwarding the iron to Danville Va & he has now to
request that you will give him every assistance in your power to hasten
the work. |
The Genl also desires you to make arrangements at once to
send engine & cars (flats) to Statesville to receive & transport the iron
as fast as it can be taken up from the Road & that you supply a large
working force to expedite the work. |
I am Major |
Very Respectfully |
