To repair the Rail Road between Danville and Richmond Va
{Richmond & Danville RR} which has been
broken by the enemy, Lieut. Col. Jno. J. Clarke, Engnr. Corps, will take
immediate steps to procure iron from the Charlotte & Statesville Road
{Atlantic, Tennessee & Ohio RR} &
have it sent forward to Danville Va. He will make application to Maj. S.
R. Chisman Q. M. at Greensboro for the laboring force & all
transportation necessary, & for such other assistance as it may be in
the powers of Major Chisman to furnish. With a view to hasten forward
the work Col. Clarke will proceed at once to Charlotte N. C. & organize
such force a can be obtained for taking up & removing the iron. He is
authorized to impress all agents, mechanics & laborers that may be
necessary. |
The speedy completion of this work is necessary to the
supply of the Army of Northern Virginia & no obstacle must be allowed to
interfere with its progress. Military support will be furnished by Col.
Jno. A. Gilmer, commdg at Salisbury, if required. Lt. Col. Clarke having
completed the duty assigned to him will return at once to the Staunton
River Bridge on the R&D RR. |
