{Letter from Thos. A. Walker to Genl. J. F.
Gilmer} Forwarded for information of Lt Col Rives Actg Chief of
Engr Bureau. I have no doubt Major Minor Meriwether would make an
excellent officer to serve on the Rail Road commission. It is proposed
to offer him a field appointment with Engineer Troops. A Lt Colonelcy,
or Majority, I forget which. See the Sect'y of War, and get his
authority for issuing the actg commission to Meriwether & assign him
temporarily to the duty with Col Garnett. Under previous understanding
A. S. Gaines can justly claim an appointment a Captn of Engineers. He
can be assigned to duty with Lockett or Pressman. |
