| My dear Gen'l, |
| An immense amount of the most important
government freight has arrived here in the last three days in seven
steamers. The wharves are filled with provisions, clothing & ordnance.
The RR depots choked with supplies. I have neither troops nor labor. I
can make so little use of the homeguards that I consider it almost
worthless. Please to let me retain two regiments of some command that at
least I may be able to press what we have if not from any ??? of the
enemy, from such disastrous accidents, as the great fire of the other
night. |
