Dear Sir, |
***** There is not one pound of sheet
copper to be purchased here. I think I mentioned to you the fact of
some sixty thousand dollars worth of sheet copper having been sunk
in a ship some ten miles from this City. I will make application to
General Lawton to see whether it cannot be raised. |
I am trying hard to make extensive
arrangements for building gun carriages of all kinds at Central {(of
Georgia)} Rail Road workshops, but am
sadly in want of Machinists, Blacksmiths & iron suitable for the
purpose. |
The shops are very extensive, embracing
machinery for all kinds of work in wood & iron. I had cut some
three months ago & put I store here, for seasoning, White Oak
for one hundred Columbiad carriages. Can I not get you to assist me
in getting the iron, which if I can obtain, & workmen I have
mentioned, I will engage to turn out work at lower cost, as rapidly
as it is wanted & better than it was ever made for the old
service. The iron most wanted is as follows -- For 8 & 10 in
Columbiad carriages, Axles, trunion plates & rails, For siege
carriages axles & tire bands. I should think the rolling mills
in Nashville could turn these out for me & if you say they can,
I will send in a bill of exactly what I want. |

I am very Respectfully |
