Head Quarters C. S. Forces |
Chattanooga, Sept 21, 1862 |
|
Lt Col. H. Maury |
|
The Maj Gen Comdg directs that you proceed
with the 32nd Ala. Regt to take post at Tullahoma. Have the Regt ready
to take the cars at Bridgeport by 9 o'c on Tuesday morning 23d inst.
Capt Freeman's Battery will march to Tullahoma starting tomorrow and a
small Cavalry force under Maj Gunter has been ordered to the same point.
They will be under your command. |
It is probable that Col John
T. Morgan's Regt of Ala Cavalry will go to the same point. If so, being
your senior he will command. |
These troops are sent to
Tullahoma for the double purpose of guarding the line of the Nashville &
Chattanooga Rail Road and producing the impression on the enemy in
Nashville that a force is moving from this place on Nashville. You will
do anything in your power to produce that impression by permitting
exaggerated reports of the number of troops under your command and of
others following on to reach Nashville. |
You will be watchful and
vigilant to prevent being surprised and cut off yourself. If you find if
necessary to fall back which is not at all anticipated, your infantry
can be brought back by RR and the Cavalry and artillery by the wagon
road. |
The guards at Running Water
and Nickajack bridges will not be moved until relieved by guards from
Col Russell's Battalion. |
Take with you a full supply of
ammunition, and all the commissary stores you have on hand. Such
subsistence and forage as can be procured for your command at and in the
vicinity of Tullahoma will be procured there. Other supplies from this
place by Rail Road. Your commsy & Qr Master will procure the necessary
funds from the Departments here. |
