Major, |
Referring to my report of the
18th inst from Columbia I have now merely to address my arrival here
this evening, having tarried last night at Augusta that I might see &
confer with Major Cranston. I learn from him the appointment of Major
Morris, whom I have had the good fortune to meet here, & with whom I
have just had a long interview. I have shown him my orders & at his
suggestion we proceeded this morning to Macon to confer with Major
Cummings & thence to Columbus. We will endeavor to devise the best means
for securing the surplus of subsistence in this state & for making early
shipments to Richmond. |
Capt Baldwin has forwarded all
the bacon he has. There is none in Augusta & the stock in the
country as far as I have travelled is well night exhausted. |
I hope Capt Witherspoon at
Columbia has found & impressed, as I instructed him to do, the 20000 lbs
{1 1/4 car loads} held by a Georgia
speculator who represented that he was buying for the people of Richmond
under the sanction of the Secretary of War. |
I am Major |
Very Respectfully |
W H Smith |
