Sir, |
I this morning ordered Luit Horace Aldis
with six privates of Col Payrons Regiment, one of Col Buchels, and one
of Col Woods Regiment (who were here waiting Transportation) to take
charge of about one hundred and fifty horses and mules that had been
furnished by our citizens for the army and also ordered Luit Aldis to
take under his charge all animals at Eagle Lake and all others that had
accumulated at any station along the route and proceed with them to
Houston and report to Major J. E. Gaccy Qr Mr our Quarter Master Capt
Woolff is absent and has been for some days. I presume attending to
collecting Transportation and subsistence for the army. I found the
animals were coming in very fast at this place, and Eagle Lake and I
know it is utterly impossible for the {Buffalo
Bayou, Brazos & Columbus} Rail Road to transport the corn, Forage
and Military Stores now actually needed, and take the horses and mules
now on hand and accumulating every day, and I also know it is much
better to drive them as the grass is good & abundant, and all along the
route corn to feed or is already at the different stations. I knowing
the pressing necessity for transportation induced me to proceed as I
have. I hope it may merit the approval of the Commanding Genl. I shall
continue to send all the animals that are brought in, in the same way,
unless directed to do differently, unless particularly ordered I shall
continue to pursue my course, in all military matters here as I think
will benefit the service and meet the approval of Genl Magruder. |
I have the honor to be |
Very Respectfully Your Obt Svt |
