| To yours of this inst in regard to my
reply to continue interlocutions preferred to me by Maj. Meriwether on
the 21st of March 1864 I reply that said answer was intended to convey
the cost of the articles mentioned & this company at the time of
their purchase without giving any opinion as to their value at any
subsequent period. |
| It is my opinion from my knowledge of your
stock that no local appraisement made by Messers Jay & Hutton as
it appears pour the papers presented to me was not above the value of
the articles impressed & would have cost double that valuation to
have made nearly every article mentioned at any time that year. |
