We the undersigned, hardware merchants and
dealers in iron and steel residing and having business for may years
in the City of Augusta, being called upon by the Hon John P. King
Prest of the Milledgeville Rail Road Company to furnish him with a
statement of the prices current for English Bar Iron and Rail Road bar
iron on the 2d of April 1862 ----- |
Do hereby certify: that the price for
merchant bar iron in lots at that date in this market was 6 1/2 cents
per pound or $145.00 per ton. For unfinished English was 7 1/2 cts per
pound or $168.00 per ton, but that both of these kinds of iron
commanded readily and was sold by as posn stove at that date at 8 cts
per lb. or $179.20 per ton. Estimating the usual difference between
Rail Road and merchant bar iron they believe that ordinary Rail Road
bars should have commanded about 5 1/2 cts per pound $123.75 per ton
and the best bars about 6 cts per pound or $134.30 per ton, but they
believe there was little or none offered for sale in Georgia at that
time. We cannot say what such iron would be worth to Rail Roads
wanting iron for use, but suppose the value could be rather in
accordance with the top which could be sustained from the want of
iron, than its market value, as it could not be replaced. |
