Personally appeared before me Jno P King {President,
Georgia RR} who being sworn saith that in the spring of 1862
new rail road iron was well worth $100 per ton in the open market and
could not be bought in Georgia at that price. The provent's attention
was particularly brought to the subject about that time from his
efforts to replace several hundred tons belonging to the Milledgeville
Rail Road Company which had been sold in 1861 when the company
expected to be arrested in the work at Sparta for want of capital. |
He offered that price without being able
to purchase. Those who had it were unwilling to sell expecting a
further rise. He further states that in April 1862 iron of all kinds
was rising rapidly in value and has since continued to rise and is now
worth much more than $100 per ton, but how much more the
provent cant say as there is none in market to settle quotations. |
The provent states further that the
Milledgeville Rail Road Co. has suffered very heavy damage by the
seizure of their iron over and beyond the market price at the
time of seizure. This damage has been done by the disorganization of
their work top of progress. The company bridges and materials
and preab discouragement to the stockholders from the uncertainty of
the future which the seizure has forced upon them. |
