Major, |
I desire that you will take
such measures as will prevent any avoidable delay of the Richmond train
at Gordonsville, so far as its movements depends on matters connected
with your department, or under your control. Its late arrival at this
end of the road gives rise to much inconvenience. I think it unnecessary
that persons having passes from these Head Qurs or from the Provost
Marshal at Culpeper Ct. House should be required to renew them at
Gordonsville, and the same remark is applicable to those coming from
Richmond with proper passes from the authorities there. An examination
of each passport which might be made by an officer placed on the train
for the purpose, will accomplish all that is required , and save time.
It is understood that upon the arrival of trains from either direction,
you replace the guard with one of your own. The officer put in charge by
you, can be directed to examine and countersign all passports detraining
all persons not properly provided. This will save the time now consumed
in obtaining new passports or presenting those held by passengers at
your office for approval. |
Very respectfully Your obt Servt |
