Colonel, |
Obt to your request we have looked into
the subject of getting up the Trucks for 225 cars. Our shop room is
still so restricted by the burning of our buildings last year that we
don't see how we could arrange to do the wood work. If you could
arrange for that at other shops we could get up the Iron Work for you
with some assistance of men and materials. These cars would require
about Eight hundred tons of Pig Iron {about
7,100 pounds per car} and fifteen thousand pounds of Brass {about
67 pounds per car}. You would have to forward the materials for the Brass. We could
furnish three fourths of the Pig Iron, you one fourth, provided your
wagons will haul four hundred tons from Caroline Furnace to Staunton.
It would be necessary for you to supply us four Moulders which we will
name, five or six Blacksmiths, some Finishers and a dozen men for
Rolling Mill work and such other men and materials as we may find
necessary as the work progresses. |
It is probable that we might make the iron
for two cars per day after getting fully started. |
It will also be necessary that you will
give us such aid in getting corn as we may find necessary to subsist
our people and animals if we do this work. |
If you conclude that you can give us the
assistance required please let us know and we will undertake the work
upon reasonable terms having reference to its cost. |
We think you can get the wood work done at
one of the Railroad shops. |
Very Respectfully |
Your Obt. Servant |
