T. H. Wynne Esq {Superintendent,
Richmond & Petersburg RR} |
|
Dear Sir, |
Enclosed is a telegram received from your
agent at Petersburg by one of my Lieutenants -- Lt. S. Ker, CS Infy. |
Having received most urgent orders from
the War Dept to forward caissons to the seat of War in the South/
having none on hand, and learning that there were several at the Depot
in Petersburg waiting transportation, I directed Lt. Ker to telegraph
to the agent to forward them immediately. |
I am in the daily custom of telegraphing
all over the Confederacy in this manner; having better opportunities
of knowing the necessities of the service, I can of course inform
Agents ??? what stores preference should be given in transportation. |
I have to acknowledge from yourself
particularly, and from all officers of the rail roads, prompt
cooperation, and the kindest courtesy. |
I am aware of the annoyances to which
agents of rail roads are subjected but after making every allowance
for the vexation of business, I cannot consent to permit so flagrant
an insult to my department to pass, without at least calling your
attention to it. |
With much respect |
Yours Truly |
Briscoe G. Baldwin |
