Dear Sir, |
I would like very much to have an extra
train tomorrow morning. As there are now 20 cars for us at P RR Dep {Petersburg
RR Depot} & 5 or six car loads of cannon Shells Balls and
Carriages at Norfolk Dep. {Norfolk &
Petersburg RR Depot} & 8 of our Cars here now besides the
Warehouse full of freight & a lot of Cotton & Shingles on the
Platform. if you can let me have two Extras tomorrow please do
so, we must have one, anyhow so as to give us Switch Room. I have 4
car loads of Iron here now for the Norfolk R. N. Y. which you sent me
word to unload at the Norfolk Depot. The Q. M. at Norfolk has
sent word that the Cannon &c (5 car loads) must be transferred
from their cars to ours at the N&P Depot. which is going to give
us a good deal of trouble, as we have no Engine which we can command
when the Norfolk Road is clear. The Engine from the P RR is all the
time occupied either shifting Cars at their Depot or hauling cars
loaded & empty between this Depot & theirs, & always suit
their own convenience before helping me. The Chesterfield is the only
Engine we have (except the Pocahontas) that will work on the Govt.
Track, & as she is on the Road all the time I cant get hold of her
for it takes from 2 to 3 hours to shift the mail train get turned
around & get in the Accommodation, & takes Bush from the time
he gets here until he is ready to go away to get his train shifted in,
& the outward one off. So he has no time to take us to the Norfolk
Road or bring our Cars back. I report this to you that if we should be
any behind in transferring Govt. freight on the Norfolk Road you may
know why. |
Very truly |
