Dear Sir, |
Your favor of the 25th of last month --
received a few days ago, -- would have been answered sooner, were it not
for a meeting of the stockholders of this Road, held but a short time
since. |
I would find it difficult to frame a bill
that would meet the wants and the emergency; without going on to
Richmond, where I could consult with others, and where, I could avail
myself of the valuable experience you must have acquire in the past two
years. |
With suggestions from you, Col Miles or
Genl Wigfall could readily prepare a bill that I trust would cover all
the ground considered requisite. |
I do not know if Genl Wigfall has yet
reached Richmond; but if he has, and should he invite you to an
uninterrupted discussion of this question, much I think might be
accomplished for the good of the country, and without detriment to
yourself, or fear of interrupting the pleasant relationship existing
between yourself and Genl Lawton. |
From a conversation had with Mr Trenholm,
while in Richmond, I feel confident that he would lend his aid &
influence, if ??ined. |
In reference to your own position, (if
such a bill, as alluded to, should pass), there can be no doubt your own
choice & selection would determine the appointment as you desired. |
It will be almost impossible for me to
visit Richmond before the adjournment of Congress and yet I feel that
this subject is of such vital importance to our country, that I would be
willing to make almost any sacrifice to see the desired result,
accomplished. |
If you can suggest any other method by
which I can forward this matter, please advise me, and it will give me
pleasure so to act. |
Very Respectfully & truly Yours |
Bentley D. Hasell
