Three thousand troops a day is the
utmost that can be transported South and under instructions from
Genl. Lawton I have ordered transportation for that number to be at
Hamilton's Crossing {on the Richmond,
Fredericksburg & Potomac RR, just south of Fredericksburg} tomorrow
& daily thereafter till Genl. Hood's Division is moved. General
Law was telegraphed to be in readiness with the troops. |
They can be brought to Richmond faster
than this but it will not result in any advantage to do so. |
From a conversation you had with Mr.
Whitcomb {Superintendent, Virginia Central RR}
he inferred that you wanted the men brought here as fast as
possible. If this is still your idea telegraph me and I will arrange
accordingly. |
