| Sir, |
| Your telegram reached me this morning. I
am obliged to you for the promptness with which you proffer to serve
this govt. in this matter of transportation. I dispatched the
authorities of the E. T. R. R. {East Tennessee
& Georgia RR} for permission to run a train to Knoxville,
on the 26th & again on 27th inst and received no reply until 29th.
On the evening of that date I started one of your trains to Knoxville.
Another would have gone this evening, but for rumors of a raid upon
some point near Cleveland. Under the circumstances, I do not feel
disposed to risk a train until I can learn that the rumors are without
foundation in fact. |
