I have been instructed by Genl
Beauregard through Maj. Myers Engr Corps to remove from the Macon
& Brunswick Railroad the Iron Rails Chairs & spikes from
Buzzard Roost to the Terminus (15 miles) for the purpose of completing
the Railroad connection between Atlanta & Augusta {the
Georgia RR}. I have served the notice of impressment on the
President Judge Cochran & also seen him in person. He informs me
that he will place every possible obstruction in the way to prevent
the removal of the iron &c. |
I am satisfied that an
injunction will immediately issue from some of the courts here to
restrain the removal. Which will bring the Govt in direct contact with
the Civil Authorities. |
The work cannot be commenced on
a/c of high water at present but I presume the water will fall
sufficient to allow me to commence in about one week. I have the force
& tools necessary in camp near this place to commence the work at
the earliest moment practicable. |
If the iron is not removed
promptly all the work on the above connection from this side will have
to stop as there is not sufficient material on hand to keep them
employed more than one week longer -- thereby causing a delay of from
six weeks to two months in making connection with Augusta. |
I know of no other available
source from which to procure iron for the above purpose & am well
acquainted with most of the Railroads in the State & in Alabama. |
The only business of
importance done on the M&Brunswick Road is wood & lumber for
this post, which could be as readily supplied from the South Western
Road & at less cost to the Govt. |
I would respectfully ask if I
will be supported in removing this material against any obstacles the
company may place in the way, as I feel certain if the military power
will not support me it will be useless to make any further
arrangements for the removal & we might as well stop the work on
the connection at once from this end. |
Very Respectfully |
