Sir, |
I returned from the bridge
{Alabama & Mississippi Rivers RR}
yesterday. If new life is not infused into that work, and that without
delay, the whole will prove an utter failure and I insist upon your
returning at once and devoting your personal attention and presence to
the work, as required by the contract. I telegraphed you on 21st & again
on 22nd Inst. to this effect, but have received no answer. When you left
here, you expected both cribs to have been in before this time, whereas
about one half (5 logs round) of one crib is framed and 52 sticks
of the other crib are yet growing. Not one lick has been struck in the
patterns for the castings notwithstanding Mr Barker has told me more
than once that Mr Higgins was at work on them. I find they have not even
been lined out. The work at the mills is equally behind, but little
timber has been brought to the bridge & yet there is nothing at the mill
to show for it. This cannot go on so any longer. I hope to see you here
without delay. |
Respectfully |
