| Goldsboro, N. C. |
| March 3d, 1863 |
| |
| His Excellency Z. B. Vance |
| Governor of North Carolina |
| |
| I have been very anxious to
have a long talk with you. But as we have a new excitement about
immense reinforcements at Newbern, I am afraid to leave here. |
| ***** |
| Com. Lynch is very anxious to
get the rail-road iron at or near Laurinburg & belonging to the
Wilmington & Charlotte R. R. {Wilmington,
Charlotte & Rutherford RR}. He thinks that he will have to
abandon his gun boats, unless he can get this iron. |
| If I can safely leave here, I
will do so soon. |
| With great respect |
| D. H. Hill |
