Pres't.

Sir,

I respectfully present the following report of the working operations of this road for the fiscal year ending Sept'r 30th, 1864, so far as the same has come under my supervision.
My connection with this company commenced on the 1st of April last, when we were running trains as far as Bremley's Crossing, and continued to run to that point, with several short interruptions, occasioned by the close proximity of the enemy, until about the 18th of May; at which time, the enemy having occupied the road east of the Chickahominy, burnt the bridges over that river, and during their occupancy removed the rails from all that portion extending from a point a short distance east of the Chickahominy to Bremley's, thus confining our operations to that portion lying between this city and Meadow Station, a distance of eleven miles only, and as the use of so short a distance of track, leading as it did to a country exhausted by the passing through of General Grant's army on its way to the south side, could yield no remunerating prospects, it was deemed prudent to transfer our trains to other roads, and accordingly, about the last of May, one train was sent to be employed in the service of the Confederate States government on the roads between Wilmington and Richmond, or on those between the former point and Danville. On the 27th of July following, we sent another to Petersburg, to be similarly employed; by a later arrangement the last named train was put in the service of the State of Virginia, to transport provisions to supply the poor of this city and citizens residing in the country, whose homes had been desolated by the enemy. They are still so employed. Engine Chickahominy was hired to the Piedmont road about the 2nd of June last, and is still on that road.
For details of receipts and expenditures for working the road while in use, and for working our trains on other roads, I refer you to the Treasurer's statements.
The following statements well exhibit the amount of motive power, rolling stock, &c., of this Company:
Table A will show the amount of motive power, rolling stock &c.
Table B will show the amount of stock in carpenter's shop, smith's shop, store room, &c.
Table C will show the amount of oil, tallow, waste and wood used, and the number of miles run by each engine.
Respectfully.
G. S. Netherland
