Since the completion of the
Piedmont Railroad, a route for travel and transportation has been
opened over the Richmond & Danville Railroad, which forms a
competing line with ours for the carrying of through passengers,
freights and the great Southern mail along the Atlantic States, South
of us. The two lines diverge at Richmond, and reunite at Kingsville,
S. C. The distance, by either route varies in length only a few miles.
That through Petersburg and Wilmington enjoys the advantage of having
much more favorable grades than the other, and in winter, a milder
climate. The terminal points, by our route, can be reached, even at
present, as quickly as by that through Danville. In order, however, to
render it secure against the diversion of the through travel and
traffic, which it has hitherto enjoyed, it is absolutely necessary
that the break of connection in Petersburg be filled up, so as to
avoid the discomfort, expense and delay thereby caused. When that is
done, the three roads between this city and Wilmington can provide a
sufficient number of through cars, to be owned jointly, in which
passengers may be carried the entire distance to and from those points
without change, thus making but one break between this and Kingsville.
Application has been made to the Common Council of Petersburg, to
grant permission to this and the Petersburg Railroad Company, to
connect their tracks through that city. Petersburg and its citizens
are too largely interested in the stock of the Petersburg Railroad,
and the loss of travel and traffic over that road is too imminent to
admit of a doubt that the proper authority will readily be granted. |
