Annual Report of the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac RR
as of April 1, 1861,
Committee of Examination's Report

Report of Com. of Examination

Mr. E. T. Morris, on behalf of the Examining Committee, offered the following repot, which was received and approved:

To the Stockholders
The Inspecting Committee have discharged the duties assigned them, and ask leave to report the result of their examinations.
On inspection last fall, they found the roadway, bridges, machinery and fixtures generally in remarkably good order; and in the examination which they have made at the present date, they have found the depots, bridges, machinery, &c., all in very good order, and the roadway also in good order with the exception of damages done to it by the frequent and violent rains of the winter and spring.
Great damage was done along the line of the Road by the rains, and a freshet which occurred during the last month, and the Officers of the Company have been very diligent in having all the necessary repairs done, so that the working of the Road is now regular and perfectly safe. A good deal of work, however, yet remains to be done in the way of clearing out the drains and filling up washes caused by the heavy rains and freshet.
The new Depot at Taylorsville has been finished, and several new cars have been also built since our last report. We found along the line a considerable amount of the necessary materials for re-laying with heavy bar the part of the Road yet unlaid, but that work has been very prudently suspended in consequence of the unsettled state of the country. The Stockholders will doubtless be informed by the Directory that the business of the Company has been seriously impaired by the unwarranted seizure of the Potomac steamboats by the government at Washington and the consequent suspension of their through business; and since that time the State of Virginia has taken possession of the Company's property at Acquia Creek for military purposes, so that there is no pressing necessity just now for re-laying that portion of the Road.
   Which is respectfully reported,
Ed. T. Morris
Thos. B. Anderson
